Blueberry lily (Dianella revoluta), also called blue flax-lily, is an evergreen Australian perennial with narrow, leathery leaves and clumping growth from underground rhizomes. Its blue to purple flower sprays open from spring into summer, followed by blue-purple berries that can remain on the plant for months; established plants may form broad colonies. [The Australian National Botanic Gardens profile](https://staging.anbg.gov.au/gnp/interns-2007/dianella-revoluta.html) reports plants about 1 m tall and up to 1.5 m across.
## In the garden
Use this flax-lily in a mass planting, rockery, border, or as an understorey accent. The Australian profile notes that parrots and other birds are attracted to its fruit. It accepts full sun or part shade, and its foliage and berries provide interest beyond the flowering period.
## Growing conditions
Blueberry lily grows in varied Australian woodland, mallee, and sclerophyll settings. It suits many soils but prefers a well-drained bed enriched with leaf mould or compost. Once established it tolerates dry periods and frost; provide regular water while young and during establishment.
## Maintenance
Remove old brown leaves to keep the clump tidy. Divide rhizomes in cooler months if you want to propagate the plant or manage a spreading colony. Water newly divided plants while they establish, and avoid leaving roots in poorly drained soil.
