About Heart Attack Pinks

Dianthus barbatus ‘Heart Attack’ is a perennial Sweet William selection introduced by Juniper Level Botanic Garden. [Plant Delights Nursery](https://www.plantdelights.com/products/dianthus-barbatus-heart-attack) describes a long-lived clump with glossy dark green foliage and brilliant red-black, carnation-like flowers that begin in early spring. ## Flowers and form The nursery lists a height of 12 inches, evergreen dormancy, sun exposure, and zones 4a–8b, “at least.” It reports that flowering begins in early spring and continues for months, and that the original clump has persisted for many years. Red-black flowers and evergreen foliage give this selection interest beyond its bloom period. ## Garden placement Use its compact height near the front of a sunny border, in a rock garden, or in a container. The nursery lists it among cut flower and pollinator plants, and notes its appeal to hummingbirds. ## Maintenance For general Sweet William care, the [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/105495/dianthus-barbatus/details) recommends full sun, well-drained soil, and deadheading as needed.
