Carnation is Dianthus caryophyllus, a perennial that can develop a woody base as it ages. Its single flowers are clove-scented and vary through pink and purple shades above gray-green foliage, while the evergreen leaves give it interest between flowering periods. It recommends a sunny position and well-drained soil, including loam, sand, or chalk, with neutral to alkaline conditions. The species is suitable for flower borders, gravel and rock gardens, patios, and cut-flower use. These are species-level ranges; individual garden selections can vary. ## Maintenance Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering, then trim lightly after bloom or in spring. Avoid persistently wet soil, and watch for slugs, aphids, and fungal problems in crowded or poorly ventilated sites. The existing “Clove Pink” name is retained alongside RHS-supported names including carnation, clove carnation, and border carnation.
