About Single Fire Star Dianthus

Fire Star is a compact evergreen dianthus with blue-green, grasslike foliage and single red flowers marked by a darker crimson eye. This Whetman Star™ Single selection blooms from late spring into early summer, may repeat in fall, and has a spicy clove fragrance ([plant profile](https://www.perennials.com/plants/dianthus-star-single-fire-star.html); [grower notes](https://pinksbywhetman.com/media/pdfs/Dianthus-Fire-Star.pdf)). ## Landscape Use Its low cushion works along sunny borders, paths, rock gardens, and gravel plantings. The short stems and fragrant blooms can also be cut for small arrangements. ## Growing Conditions Give it full sun and sharply drained soil. It is suited to hot, dry or gravelly sites once established; avoid waterlogged conditions around the crown. ## Size and Siting Allow roughly 6–8 inches of height and 8–10 inches of spread. Plant near an edge or in a raised, well-drained bed where the foliage and flowers stay visible. ## Maintenance Shear lightly after the main flush to keep the mound compact and encourage repeat flowering. Remove spent stems as needed; good drainage is important through winter.
