About Fringed Bleeding Heart

Dicentra ‘Luxuriant’ is a compact fringed bleeding heart with finely divided, gray-green leaves and nodding red heart-shaped flowers. The flowers appear in late spring, while the foliage can remain attractive through summer when moisture is adequate. ## Size and flowering The [Chicago Botanic Garden plant profile](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/plant-information/plant-finder/dicentra-luxuriant-bleeding-heart) describes a mounded plant about 15 inches tall, blooming in May and June, and lists USDA Zones 3–9. The [RHS cultivar profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/90247/dicentra-luxuriant/details) gives a broader 0.1–0.5-meter height and spread range and confirms the cultivar’s deciduous foliage, divided leaves, late-spring red flowers, and moist-soil preference. The current 0.5-meter height and 0.4-meter width remain within that RHS range. ## Siting Grow in partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains well. The Chicago Botanic Garden notes that summer moisture helps the foliage remain attractive; RHS also lists full sun where soil remains moist and recommends sheltered conditions. Use it at a border edge or in a shaded planting where its fern-like foliage provides texture. ## Maintenance Divide in early spring or after the foliage dies back if the clump needs renewal. RHS notes that no routine pruning is required.
