Create design onlineAbout Diervilla
Diervilla is a genus of deciduous, suckering shrubs native to eastern North America. Kew recognizes three accepted species; they are grown for summer clusters of yellow tubular flowers and foliage that can add seasonal color, although mature size and leaf color vary among species and named selections.
## Choosing a place
Treat this record as a genus-level guide rather than a single-size plant profile. Individual species and cultivars range from compact shrubs to wider colonies, so check the exact selection before setting spacing or height expectations. Many grow in sun or partial shade and prefer soil that drains well.
## Garden use
Use a named, correctly identified selection for borders, informal hedges, banks, or naturalistic planting where suckering fits. Bush honeysuckle is a common name for Diervilla, a different genus from Lonicera. See [Kew’s Diervilla genus entry](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:6071-1), the [RHS species profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/5847/diervilla-rivularis/details), and the [Chicago Botanic Garden overview](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/diervilla-sessilifolia/common-name/southern-bush-honeysuckle/).
## Care
Prune selectively to control spread and remove damaged stems. Match water and soil care to the species and site, and allow space for colonies where suckering is part of the plant’s natural growth.
## Maintenance
