About Fuyu Persimmon Tree

‘Fuyu’ is a named Japanese persimmon cultivar (Diospyros kaki) valued for firm, nonastringent orange fruit. Its rounded, spreading deciduous canopy, autumn foliage, and fruit that can persist after leaf drop add edible and winter-garden interest. ## Size and siting Allow space for a mature tree about 20–30 feet tall and wide; it grows in USDA hardiness zones 7a–10b. Give it full sun and moist, well-drained loam or sandy soil. The tree flowers in spring, and its leaves turn yellow to orange and red in fall. Fuyu fruit can be eaten while firm, fresh or in baked goods. In Florida, harvest generally runs from mid-November into early December; thinning clustered fruit helps regulate crop load and encourage larger fruit. The tree suits edible, Asian, and winter gardens, lawns, naturalized areas, and espalier or screen plantings. Remove root suckers unless a naturalized effect is wanted, and consider fallen-fruit cleanup when placing the tree near paths or patios. Birds use its fruit, while pollinators visit the flowers.
