About Emerald Ice Green Hopbush

‘Emerald Ice’ is a named selection of Dodonaea viscosa, an evergreen hopbush grown for its broad, dense shape and bright green, oblanceolate leaves. The patented selection is female and produces no pollen; the patent estimates freeze hardiness near 10°F. ## Form and placement Use it as a large foliage shrub or informal screen in full sun and well-drained soil. Civano lists mature height and width of 8–12 ft, while the patent describes a representative plant about 9 ft tall and wide. Established plants tolerate dry conditions, but need regular water while roots are getting established. ## Maintenance Water through the first growing season, then give a deep soak during prolonged dry spells. Prune selectively in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and maintain a broad, natural shape. Avoid frequent shearing.
