About Dragon Head

‘Blue Moon’ is a named form of northern dragonhead with deep blue, hooded flowers above narrow green foliage. It is a compact perennial for sunny borders and early-season planting, with flowering reported from late spring into early summer. [The RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/253441/dracocephalum-ruyschiana-blue-moon/details) accepts the name *Dracocephalum ruyschiana* ‘Blue Moon’; [Diane’s Flower Seeds](https://www.dianeseeds.com/dracocephalum-ruyschiana-blue-moon.html?no_redirect=true) describes the selection’s blue hooded flowers and full-sun-to-part-shade siting. ## Flowers and setting Plant it near the front of a perennial border or among other spring bloomers, where the flower spikes remain visible above the foliage. The seed grower reports late-spring to early-summer bloom and a compact 12-inch height and spacing; other garden listings report taller flower spikes, so use the existing catalog range as an approximate garden size rather than treating one number as universal. ## Siting and soil Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position. The current catalog identifies this as a hardy perennial with an existing zone-minimum value; sources consulted do not provide direct USDA evidence for a maximum zone. Keep soil draining freely and avoid a persistently waterlogged position. ## Maintenance Leave the leafy clump in place after flowering, then remove spent flower stems as they fade. In early spring, clear away dead material without cutting into emerging shoots. Divide the clump only if it becomes crowded.
