Copper Shield Fern is the prolific form of the autumn fern, *Dryopteris erythrosora*. Its divided fronds are light green and can open with a pink tint; some fronds may also carry small plantlets, giving this form its “prolifica” name. [The RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/223287/dryopteris-erythrosora-prolifica/details) describes it as an evergreen Japanese fern with a mature height of about 0.5–1 m and a narrower spread of 0.1–0.5 m.
## Growing Conditions
Plant it in partial or full shade in cool soil that stays moist while draining freely. The RHS lists chalk, clay, loam, and sand as suitable soil types. Protect the fronds from drying conditions and water regularly while the fern establishes.
## Garden Use
Use the compact clump beneath shrubs, in a shaded border, or as a leafy accent where its fresh pink-tinged growth can be seen. It keeps foliage through the year in suitable conditions and works well with other shade-loving perennials.
## Maintenance
Remove dead or damaged fronds when needed. Divide the clump in spring if you want additional plants, or sow ripe spores for propagation, as outlined by [the RHS](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/223287/dryopteris-erythrosora-prolifica/details).
