Create design onlineAbout Male Fern
Male Fern, *Dryopteris filix-mas*, forms an upright clump of finely divided green fronds for shaded gardens. The fronds commonly reach 2–3 ft tall, and the plant is useful in woodland settings, borders, and grouped plantings. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/dryopteris-filix-mas/) notes that it grows in dappled sun to full shade and tolerates deep shade, deer, rabbits, and clay soil.
## Growing Conditions
Choose partial to full shade and moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Established plants adapt to different soil conditions, but young ferns benefit from regular water while roots settle in. Native Plant Trust lists a 2–3 ft spread and USDA zones 4–8; NC State Extension lists the species through zone 9.
## Garden Use
Plant it beneath trees and shrubs, in a woodland garden, or in a mass where the arching fronds form a steady green ground-level layer. The fern can also serve as a specimen in a shaded border.
## Maintenance
Remove old or damaged fronds as new growth begins in spring. Divide an established clump when you need more plants or want to renew a crowded planting.
