Durio zibethinus is the tropical tree that produces durian fruit. It is native to Sumatra and Borneo and grows naturally in warm, humid forest; orchard trees are managed at a smaller size than forest trees. The large, edible fruits develop on mature trees, so this species is best suited to frost-free tropical sites with room for a substantial canopy.
## Growing conditions
Provide consistent warmth, humidity, deep fertile soil, and reliable drainage. Young trees benefit from temporary shade and protection from strong wind while establishing; established trees need abundant light and space. The tree is sensitive to cold and dry air, so it is unsuitable for temperate gardens or exposed cool sites. Its fruit is the principal food use, while the tree's eventual size makes it a long-term orchard or landscape specimen.

## Maintenance
Keep soil evenly moist during establishment without allowing roots to sit in water. Maintain wind protection around young trees, and provide shade until they are established. Remove damaged or crossing branches as needed, and allow ample distance from buildings and other trees for the mature canopy.
