About Manambe Palm

The Manambe Palm is a striking highland palm from central Madagascar, with a stout, often paired trunk and a pale, waxy crownshaft beneath a crown of feather-like leaves. It makes a dramatic focal tree where there is room for its eventual height and broad crown; its mature form can vary from a single stem to a small group. [Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:665956-1) accepts the name *Chrysalidocarpus decipiens* and lists the former name *Dypsis decipiens* as a synonym. ## Garden Use Use this palm as a specimen in a warm, bright garden with ample overhead clearance. Its tall, sculptural trunk and plumose blue-green foliage remain the main display, rather than seasonal flowers. The species is slow growing, so allow space for a long-lived tree instead of planning around quick screening. The [Palm Grower’s Guide](https://palmpedia.net/wiki/Dypsis_decipiens) describes its central-highland habitat, variable clustering habit and cultivation needs. ## Growing Conditions The species comes from plateau forest and rocky or streamside sites in Madagascar’s central highlands. Grow it in a sunny position with sharply draining soil; allow the root zone to dry somewhat between waterings, especially for young potted plants, since persistently wet conditions can encourage rot. It tolerates some cold better than many tropical palms, but site it where freezing exposure can be avoided. ## Maintenance Keep the root zone open and well drained, and water more carefully during cool weather. Remove only fully dead leaves, leaving green foliage in place. Choose nursery-grown stock where available; avoid collecting wild plants or seeds.
