*Dypsis faneva* is a slender, clustering palm native to lowland and coastal rainforest in northeastern Madagascar. Its arching pinnate leaves have conspicuously enlarged terminal leaflets, a feature reflected in the Malagasy name *faneva*, meaning “flag.” Kew accepts the name *Dypsis faneva*; the species is also recorded locally as Tsinkiara mavinty.
## Garden Use
This is a refined palm for a sheltered tropical garden or a large container, where the slender stems and distinctive leaf tips can be seen at close range. Its naturally clumping habit creates a small grove effect rather than a single formal trunk. It is suited to warm, humid settings and is not a cold-climate landscape palm.
## Growing Conditions
The species occurs in moist lowland forest and is reported to grow best in moist, shady conditions. Protect it from drying winds and give it consistent moisture while avoiding stagnant water around the roots. Container culture can make it easier to provide shade and shelter where outdoor conditions are less reliably tropical.
The [Palm Grower’s Guide](https://palmpedia.net/wiki/Dypsis_faneva) records its common name, rainforest habitat and moist, shady cultivation preference.
## Maintenance
Keep the growing medium evenly moist and freely draining, and move a container plant out of harsh exposure if foliage begins to scorch or dry. Retain healthy fronds and let the cluster develop naturally; remove only dead or damaged leaves. Choose cultivated stock because this is a rare forest palm.
