About Onilahy Palm

The upright form of Dypsis onilahensis is a robust, clustering palm with upright to recurved feather leaves. Pale, powdery stems and a bright crownshaft add contrast, while the upright outline gives this form a more vertical presence than the pendulous form. ## Form and Placement Specialist palm references distinguish the upright, recurved-leaf form from the more pendulous form. The species is reported from Madagascar’s riverine forests and can grow in lightly shaded sites through full sun where soil remains moist but drains freely. See the [Palms for California account](https://www.palmpedia.net/palmsforcal/Dypsis_onilahensis) and [PACSOA’s species profile](https://www.pacsoa.org.au/wiki/index.php/Dypsis_onilahensis). Kew currently lists Dypsis onilahensis as a synonym of Chrysalidocarpus onilahensis, while older palm references retain the Dypsis name. ## Siting Provide room for a clump and its arching fronds, with consistent moisture and good drainage. Young plants are described as slow-growing; sheltered light shade is a sensible starting point, with gradual adjustment to brighter exposure. ## Maintenance Protect the crownshaft and emerging spear, and remove only dead or badly damaged fronds. Leave enough clearance around the clump for its mature leaves to arch without rubbing walls or paths.
