About Dypsis pilulifera

Chrysalidocarpus piluliferus is a palm native to Madagascar’s north and east-central regions, where Kew classifies it in the wet tropical biome. Older references use the synonym Dypsis pilulifera, and field observations describe a large palm with a conspicuously ringed trunk and leaves arranged in three ranks. ## Garden Use This is a specialist tropical collection palm suited to a spacious, humid setting rather than a small garden bed. Its orderly leaf arrangement and ringed trunk provide structural interest where a large palm can be viewed from a distance. ## Growing Conditions Field records place the species in moist submontane forest on slopes at about 750–950 m elevation. For cultivation, maintain warmth and steady root-zone moisture; these are habitat-based recommendations, not a verified hardiness or waterlogging rating. A species-specific sun preference and numeric mature dimensions were not confirmed. ## Maintenance Give the crown and trunk room to develop, and remove only dead or damaged foliage. Avoid using a genus-wide cold limit or assigning a USDA zone from elevation alone. [Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:665972-1) confirms the accepted name, synonym, and range; the [Analamazaotra Reserve palm guide](https://www.inaturalist.org/guide_taxa/340300), drawing on The Palms of Madagascar and the Madagascar Catalogue, records its form and moist forest habitat.
