About Dypsis procera

*Dypsis procera* is a moderate-sized palm native to Madagascar, where it grows in lowland rainforest around the east coast. It usually forms a clump of stems, though solitary plants are reported, and reaches about 6 m tall. Its leaves may be entire and bifid or divided irregularly into several leaflets. [PACSOA species account](https://www.pacsoa.org.au/wiki/index.php/Dypsis_procera) · [Field Guide to the Palms of Madagascar](https://palmpedia.net/wiki/books/12_Field_Guide_to_the_Palms_of_Madagascar_English.pdf) ## Form and placement The multiple stems make this a broad, textured specimen rather than a narrow single-trunk palm. Leave enough room for the clump to develop and for its crown to be viewed without crowding paths or walls. In Madagascar it occurs in lowland rainforest, usually on flat ground and sometimes on slopes, at elevations up to about 600 m. ## Growing conditions A warm, sheltered position with regular moisture is recommended for cultivation. The available horticultural account describes the species as frost sensitive, so outdoor planting is best limited to tropical or warm subtropical conditions; in cooler climates, grow it in a protected conservatory or a movable container. The published genus-level reassessment retains this species in *Dypsis*. ## Maintenance Keep the root zone evenly moist during active growth and protect the crown from frost and drying exposure. Check the spread of new stems as the clump develops, and remove only damaged or dead foliage.
