About Water Vonitra palm

Water Vonitra palm (Dypsis utilis) is a Madagascar palm with pinnate leaves and fiber-clad stems that may branch into upright, closely parallel shoots. In its native range it grows along streams and in swamp or moist forest, so it is best suited to a warm garden with dependable moisture and room for a tall crown. ## Garden Use Use this unusual palm as a specimen where its textured trunk and large fronds can be seen clearly. Stems can be solitary or form a cluster, and sources report mature heights around 12–15 m, with some habitat stems reaching about 50 ft; allow generous vertical clearance. The species is also known as Vonitra utilis. ([Useful Tropical Plants](https://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Dypsis+utilis); [Palm Beach Palm & Cycad Society](https://www.palmbeachpalmcycadsociety.com/palms/documents/DypsisUtilis.pdf)) ## Growing Conditions Choose a sunny position with very moist soil. Its natural streamside and swamp-forest habitat and reports from Palm Beach County both point to moisture as a central growing need. Keep the planting area open enough for the palm’s upright branching stems and long leaves. ## Maintenance Maintain consistent soil moisture and check irrigation during dry weather. Keep the mature canopy clear of overhead structures and avoid crowding the plant against paths or buildings.
