Texas ebony (Ebenopsis ebano) is a slow- to moderate-growing evergreen tree with a rounded, spreading canopy of fine dark-green leaflets. Fragrant pale yellow to cream-white flower spikes appear in summer, followed by persistent dark seed pods.
## Garden Use
This drought-tolerant tree suits sunny, dry gardens and can provide medium shade as a specimen or shade tree. Plan for a mature canopy roughly 15–30 ft across and a height of about 15–30 ft; the published spread varies by reference, so allow room for a broad crown. Its short trunk and dense foliage create a strong structural presence. ([UF/IFAS Extension](https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST483))
## Growing Conditions
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil. UF/IFAS reports tolerance for clay, sand, loam, acidic and alkaline soils, plus high drought tolerance. Once established, it needs little water; avoid overwatering. The source lists USDA hardiness zones 9B–11.
## Maintenance
Prune as needed to develop a strong branch structure while the tree is young. Give the crown room to spread, and collect seed pods where they would interfere with nearby paving or use. Wind and compacted-soil tolerance can make this a useful choice in exposed, challenging sites.
