Mexican snowball

Echeveria secunda is a succulent perennial native to Mexico, forming tight rosettes of blue-green leaves, as described in the [North Carolina Extension profile](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/echeveria-secunda/) and [Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn%3Alsid%3Aipni.org%3Anames%3A274039-1/general-information). Each rosette can reach about six inches across and readily produces offsets for propagation. ## Form and flowers The Extension profile describes pointed leaves and a summer flower with yellow petals and red calyces. Flowers rise on an arching stem, and the plant can produce offsets that root when large enough. ## Placement Provide plenty of light and a sharply draining succulent mix. Echeveria secunda is often grown as a houseplant; in warm climates, it can also grow in rock or crevice gardens and spread by offsets as a ground cover. ## Maintenance Avoid overwatering and excess fertilizer to reduce root-rot risk. Protect the plant from hard frost, since it does not tolerate a hard freeze.
