About Merlot Coneflower

Echinacea ‘Merlot’ combines rose-pink rays, orange central cones, and burgundy-black stems. Terra Nova lists a 27-inch plant height, 34-inch spread, flowers to 30 inches, and July–October bloom in USDA zones 4–9 ([cultivar profile](https://www.terranovanurseries.com/product/echinacea-merlot/)); the plant patent also confirms the named selection and its dark stems ([patent description](https://www.hort.net/pedia/patent/grant/18814/)). ## Garden Use The broad clump works in sunny mixed borders and larger perennial beds, where its dark stems contrast with lighter foliage. Its long stems and large flower heads make it a strong cut-flower choice. Leave enough room for the mature spread so the flowers and wine-toned stems remain visible. ## Growing Conditions Grow in full sun with well-drained, average garden soil. The breeder reports average garden water and rates the plant for zones 4–9. Good drainage helps avoid prolonged wet conditions around the crown. ## Maintenance Water while establishing and during extended dry periods. Remove faded blooms to keep flowers coming, or retain some seed heads for birds and winter texture. Cut back old stems in spring when new growth resumes.
