About PowWow® Wild Berry Echinacea

PowWow® Wild Berry is an upright purple coneflower with vivid rose-pink petals and a dark rose center. This first-year-flowering selection brings a long-lasting, saturated bloom to pollinator beds, mixed perennial borders, and large containers. ## Form and flowering The [Ball Seed plant profile](https://info.ballseed.com/PlantInfo/?phid=024101714024978) identifies the selection as Echinacea purpurea, code PAS702917, with first-year stems about 16–20 inches tall and second-year stems about 22–24 inches; mature spread is listed at 12–16 inches. Ball lists hardiness zones 4a–10b, late-spring through autumn flowering, an upright habit, and flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Its compact branching and strong color make it useful near the front or middle of a border. ## Siting Plant in full sun and well-drained garden soil. Purple coneflower tolerates heat and dry spells once established, but water newly planted roots while they settle in. The [Illinois Extension guide](https://extension.illinois.edu/flowers/purple-coneflower) recommends full sun, well-drained soil, and avoiding heavy fertilizer, which can make stems tall and weak. ## Maintenance Trim fading flower stems to the next lateral bud or leaf when you want to encourage additional bloom. Leave some mature cones standing for birds; remove the rest in spring if you prefer a tidier bed. See [Illinois Extension’s deadheading guidance](https://extension.illinois.edu/blogs/ilriverhort/2023-06-06-3-ways-prune-perennials-longer-lasting-blooms).
