Create design onlineAbout Golden Barrel Cactus
Golden Barrel is a slow-growing cactus with a rounded, deeply ribbed green body and dense golden spines. Mature plants can reach several feet across and may form a crown of small yellow flowers after many years; [the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and National Parks Board describe its form and cultivation](https://www.desertmuseum.org/visit/sheets/Echgru.pdf).
## Site and display
Use it as a specimen in a rock garden, a dry landscape, or a sturdy container with drainage holes. Full sun encourages the strongest golden spine color, while a little light shade can protect plants in intense heat. Keep it well away from narrow paths and seating because the spines are long and sharp. Nursery-propagated plants are widely grown even though wild populations are endangered.
## Water and growth
Choose a fast-draining cactus or sandy mix and never let the pot sit in standing water. During active warm-season growth, water thoroughly and allow the mix to dry before watering again; reduce water during cool dormancy. This cactus grows slowly, and its distinctive barrel form can become taller with age, so choose its permanent site with mature size in mind.
## Maintenance
## San Luis Obispo Firewise guidance
The county lists barrel cactus Echinocactus at F2 at genus scope. This species is a representative; the list does not separately assess all species or cultivars.
