About Southern Globethistle

Southern globethistle is a clump-forming perennial with coarse gray-green leaves and stiff stems topped by round blue flowerheads. Its midsummer bloom adds a strong geometric accent to sunny borders and cutting gardens. ## Placement Allow room for a plant about 3 to 4 feet tall and roughly 2 to 2.5 feet wide, placing it toward the middle or back of a sunny perennial bed. The stems are firmer and flower color stronger in full sun, though light afternoon shade is tolerated. ## Soil and seasonal interest Use well-drained soil; this species handles lean, dry ground better than rich, wet beds. The blue spherical heads appear from midsummer into September, while the prickly gray-green foliage supplies texture before and after flowering. Flowers can be cut young for fresh or dried arrangements, and mature seedheads remain ornamental. Water during establishment, then avoid keeping the root zone wet. Remove spent flowers for a possible second flush, or leave a few heads to set seed; mature taproots make transplanting difficult. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/echinops-ritro/common-name/globe-flower/) notes that rich soil and shade can make stems floppy. ## Maintenance
