About Golden Torch Cactus

Golden Torch is a multi-stemmed columnar cactus with dark green ribs, golden spines, and large white flowers that open at night. Published mature sizes vary by source and growing conditions; references describe plants about 5–8 feet tall, with clumps ranging from roughly 1.6–5 feet wide [the RHS, University of Arizona, and an Arizona nursery describe its form and care](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/161594/echinopsis-spachiana/details). ## Site and display Grow it in full sun to light shade in sharply drained, sandy or gravelly soil. Its upright stems make a strong vertical accent in a rock garden, desert border, raised planter, or large container. White flowers open in the evening and fade the next day, providing a brief but striking spring-to-summer display. Handle and site it carefully because the golden spines can injure passersby. ## Water and cold care Water deeply but infrequently during warm growth, letting the soil dry between waterings. Once established, it needs little supplemental water; keep it nearly dry in winter and protect it from prolonged frost. A fast-draining cactus mix is important in containers, where excess moisture can collect around the roots. ## Maintenance
