Echium amoenum ‘Red Feathers’ forms a compact mound of bristly, narrow, dark-green leaves. Its upright flower spikes open red in late spring and can fade toward pink or purple, with deadheading extending the show into summer.
## Placement
Use this short-lived perennial near the front or middle of a sunny border, rock garden, or container planting. Allow about 10 to 16 inches of height and 12 to 18 inches of spread; published selection measurements vary modestly, so leave enough space for a rounded clump.
## Growing conditions
Plant in full sun or light shade in well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates dry conditions, but avoid planting it where water remains around the crown. The long flower stems suit small cut-flower arrangements and draw bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Remove finished spikes for another flush, or leave a few late-season stems if you want seedlings to replace older plants. [The RHS profile](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/325513/echium-amoenum-red-feathers/details) describes the cultivar’s red flowers fading to pink or purple, while [High Country Gardens](https://www.highcountrygardens.com/products/perennial-echium-red-feathers) lists its hardiness, compact size, and low-water use.
