El Niño® (‘NCXC1’) is a compact chitalpa selection with fragrant, deep purple flowers that resemble orchids. This deciduous shrub or small multi-stemmed tree blooms from late spring into summer and brings a long season of color to sunny gardens.
## Siting and growth
Plant in full sun to part sun in well-drained soil. The breeder, [Spring Meadow Nursery](https://springmeadownursery.com/plantfinder/el-nino-99380), lists USDA zones 6–9, a mature height of 10–15 feet, an 8–10-foot width, and purple summer flowers. It notes that cold winters can cause dieback at the colder edge of the range; wait for new growth before removing dead stems. [Proven Winners](https://admin.provenwinners.com/plants/chitalpa/el-ni-o-desert-orchid-chitalpa) confirms the cultivar code ‘NCXC1’, patent number USPP 35,880, part-sun to full-sun exposure, and early-spring shaping.
## Flowering and garden use
The flowers appear in clusters and carry a noticeable fragrance. Use the plant as a flowering specimen or in a border where its mature spread has room. Keep the soil draining freely, and provide regular water during establishment; drought tolerance is limited to low or moderate in the breeder’s profile.
## Maintenance
In early spring, remove winter-damaged wood after new growth begins and trim only as needed to shape the framework. Water new plants consistently, then reduce irrigation once roots are established while preventing severe drought stress.
