About Encephalartos arenarius

Encephalartos arenarius, the dune cycad, is a multi-stemmed South African cycad whose trunk is often partly or mostly underground. It is native to coastal dune forest and scrub in the Eastern Cape, where sandy slopes and sheltered woodland create its characteristic habitat. ## Form and Setting This medium-sized species has long, pinnate leaves; the usual foliage is dull green, with a distinct blue-leaved form also reported. Its slow-growing, sculptural habit suits a specimen planting or a spacious container in a mild climate. The [South African National Biodiversity Institute assessment](https://www.sanbi.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Encephalartos-arenarius-NDF-supporting-document.pdf) describes its restricted range and sandy coastal habitat. ## Growing Conditions In cultivation, provide sharp drainage and a sheltered position. The species grows in partial shade in its wooded habitat and can tolerate more sun in open sites; acclimate plants gradually when changing exposure. Water during dry growth periods while allowing excess moisture to drain. Frost sensitivity is reported in horticultural references, so protect it in cold climates. ## Maintenance Keep the crown clear of debris and inspect leaves and cones for scale or mealybugs. Seeds are toxic, so use gloves when handling them. See the [SANBI PlantZAfrica account](https://pza.sanbi.org/encephalartos-arenarius) for the species description and propagation notes, and the [cultivation reference](https://www.llifle.com/Encyclopedia/PALMS_AND_CYCADS/Family/Zamiaceae/29902/Encephalartos_arenarius) for garden care.
