About Encephalartos dolomiticus

The Wolkberg cycad is a slow-growing South African cycad with a striking blue crown of leaves. It grows naturally among dolomite outcrops and boulders in open grassland in Limpopo. In cultivation, strong drainage and careful watering help keep the roots and crown healthy. ## Form and setting SANBI describes an erect stem that can reach about 2 m long and 25–50 cm in diameter; longer stems may lean along the ground. Its native range is very restricted, and the [SANBI Red List](https://redlist.sanbi.org/species.php?species=823-10) assesses it as Critically Endangered and possibly extinct in the wild. Avoid any plant or seed of uncertain origin. ## Siting and care The [SANBI growing guide](https://pza.sanbi.org/encephalartos-dolomiticus) recommends full sun, while noting that light shade and frost are tolerated. Use a sharply drained mineral soil and do not keep the root zone persistently wet. The source describes a slow growth rate, so allow room for the eventual crown and avoid frequent disturbance. ## Maintenance Water during active growth when the soil has dried, then let excess moisture drain freely. Remove only dead or damaged leaves with clean tools, and protect the crown from prolonged cold, wet conditions.
