About Encephalartos eugene-maraisii

The Waterberg cycad is a distinctive, slow-growing South African species with a crown of blue-green leaves. It comes from rocky hills and steep slopes in the Waterberg region, where plants grow in open grassland and savanna. Give it sun and sharply drained soil, and allow for a substantial long-lived specimen. ## Form and habitat The [SANBI species account](https://pza.sanbi.org/encephalartos-eugene-maraisii) describes the species as endemic to the Waterberg and adjacent areas, growing among low shrubs on rocky slopes. The opened [species horticulture account](https://www.llifle.com/Encyclopedia/PALMS_AND_CYCADS/Family/Zamiaceae/31956/Encephalartos_eugene-maraisii) describes blue-green foliage and a robust trunk; upright trunks are often around 2.5 m, while taller stems may lie along the ground. Exact mature dimensions vary. ## Siting and care SANBI reports that it does best in full sunlight, is very frost resistant, and grows slowly. Its listed soil textures are sandy and loam, with acid to neutral soil reaction. Provide excellent drainage and avoid prolonged saturation, especially during cold weather. New growth is gradual, so avoid crowding the crown or disturbing established roots. ## Maintenance Water more during active growth, then let the root zone drain between waterings. Trim only dead or damaged leaves with clean tools and keep fallen debris away from the crown. Use legally propagated material and check local rules for cultivation and movement of protected cycads.
