About Encephalartos friderici-guilielmi

Encephalartos friderici-guilielmi is a clumping cycad from South Africa, commonly called the white-haired cycad. It grows on exposed Eastern Cape mountain slopes and can reach about 4 m tall. ([Kew POWO](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:297086-1); [PACSOA](https://www.pacsoa.org.au/wiki/index.php/Encephalartos_friderici-guilielmi)) ## Form and placement This medium to large species forms a cluster of stems, with slightly upright leaves. Give the mature plant enough room for its clump and position it away from narrow paths. PACSOA describes the species as very slow growing, so allow time for it to fill its space. ## Site and soil Choose a sunny, open position with excellent drainage. Its native slopes experience hot, dry summers and cold winters with frost and snow; the species is described as hardy in cultivation. Do not use the native climate as a substitute for a local hardiness-zone rating. ## Maintenance Keep the root zone free draining and avoid standing water. This cycad is slow growing, so check the soil before watering and let the mix drain fully. The POWO record confirms the accepted species name and its range from the Eastern Cape to KwaZulu-Natal; PACSOA supplies the common name and horticultural notes.
