Encephalartos horridus × arenarius is a documented cycad cross; Fairview Nursery lists it under this name. Its parent species are accepted members of Encephalartos in the Zamiaceae family, but the catalog name does not supply a measured mature range for the hybrid. ([Fairview Nursery](https://fairviewnursery.com/plants/cycads/); [Kew POWO: E. horridus](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:297093-1) and [E. arenarius](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:871771-1))
## Form and placement
E. horridus is a low, dense cycad with a clumping habit and sharp, silvery-blue juvenile leaves that turn greener as they age. E. arenarius is a multi-stemmed species with green and blue forms. These parent descriptions are useful context, but they should not be treated as a prediction that every hybrid will show the same size, color, or growth habit. ## Site and soil
Choose a bright position with excellent drainage, using the individual plant’s response to guide placement. Leave space around the leaves and avoid locations where sharp leaflets could catch passersby.
## Maintenance
Keep the root zone free draining and avoid standing water. Allow the cycad’s natural crown to develop without routine shaping.
