About Encephalartos horridus X woodii (Horwood)

Encephalartos horridus × woodii is the cycad cross commonly called “Horwood”; Fairview Nursery lists the same name and cross. The parent species belong to Encephalartos in the Zamiaceae family, and each contributes a different mature form. ([Fairview Nursery](https://fairviewnursery.com/plants/cycads/); [Kew POWO: E. horridus](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:297093-1) and [E. woodii](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org/names:297146-1)) ## Form and placement E. horridus is low growing and clumping, with rigid, spiny leaves; E. woodii is a tree-like cycad that can grow much taller. Hybrid plants can differ from one another: collectors have reported visibly different E. horridus × woodii plants, and one horticultural account describes green offspring from the cross. Use the parent records as context rather than as a guaranteed description of every Horwood. Provide drainage and observe the individual plant’s response to sun and heat before settling on a permanent position. ## Maintenance Avoid standing water around the caudex. Leave the leaf crown intact and remove only damaged material when needed.
