About Encephalartos laurentianus

Encephalartos laurentianus, also called the Kwango giant cycad, is a very large African cycad with long, dark-green fronds. It is native to the Kwango River region of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it grows in gallery forest and on nearby sandstone. ## Landscape Use Allow exceptional room for the mature crown and trunk. The [Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney PlantNET treatment](https://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/taxon.pl) records leaves several metres long, while [World Flora Online](https://www.worldfloraonline.org/taxon/wfo-0000667406) describes habitat along the Kwango and notes that plants on exposed sandstone can remain short and upright while gallery-forest plants develop elongated trunks. These contrasting forms make a young plant an unreliable guide to its eventual footprint. ## Growing Conditions This species is adapted to warm, frost-free conditions. Its natural range includes humid riverine forest and well-drained sandstone sites, so provide warmth, drainage, and enough space for a broad, heavy crown. A sheltered conservatory or large frost-free garden is more appropriate than a small patio once it grows. ## Maintenance Keep the root zone moist during active growth without allowing water to stand. Remove damaged leaves carefully and use gloves when handling plant material; cycads contain toxic compounds. Reassess clearance as the trunk and fronds enlarge.
