About Gorongowe Cycad

[Encephalartos manikensis](https://cycadlist.org/scientific_name/324) is an evergreen African cycad with a crown of long, stiff, green fronds and large cones on separate male and female plants. In a garden it brings a bold, palm-like silhouette while remaining smaller than many tree cycads. ## Garden use and siting Use it as a specimen where its spiny leaflets have room away from paths. In nature it grows on rocky slopes and granite cliffs around Mount Gorongowe, with populations in Zimbabwe and Mozambique ([species account](https://africacycads.com/species.php?id=103); [habitat reference](https://www.uodiyala.edu.iq/uploads/PDF%20ELIBRARY%20UODIYALA/EL34/The%20Cycads.pdf)). Give it strong light and sharply drained soil; established plants tolerate some frost, though severe or prolonged freezes are unsuitable. ## Water and care Water during active growth, then let excess moisture drain freely around the caudex. Avoid waterlogged soil and unnecessary disturbance of the roots. Its stiff leaves and compact trunk make it a lasting focal point in a warm, sunny garden. ## Maintenance Remove only dead or damaged leaves with clean tools, and take care around the sharp leaflet tips. Leave the growing crown intact.
