[Encephalartos natalensis × horridus](https://palmtalk.org/topic/56012-encephalartos-natalensis-x-horridus/) is a collector-grown cycad hybrid between the green-leaved Natal cycad and the blue-leaved Eastern Cape cycad. Growers report variation in foliage color, with new leaves emerging green before developing a blue cast as they mature; the parent species have distinct foliage and growth habits ([grower report](https://palmtalk.org/topic/56012-encephalartos-natalensis-x-horridus/); [Botanic Gardens of Sydney](https://www.botanicgardens.org.au/our-science/our-collections/plant-families/cycads)).
## Garden use and siting
Use it as a specimen where its crown can be viewed from a short distance and its stiff leaflets have room. The parent species come from rocky South African habitats, but their mature sizes and hardiness differ. Choose a bright position with well-drained soil and leave room for the plant to develop; do not assume that the hybrid reaches the larger parent’s size or inherits either parent’s full frost tolerance.
## Water and growth
Keep the root zone from remaining waterlogged, and water more during active growth than during cool rest. The growth rate and eventual dimensions of this cross are not established by the available plant-specific reports.
## Maintenance
Remove old leaves only when they are fully dry. Wear gloves when handling the spiny foliage and avoid disturbing established roots.
