About Encephalartos ngoyanus

Encephalartos ngoyanus is a compact cycad whose short stem usually remains below ground. Its dark-green leaves make it a useful close-viewing specimen for a sheltered rock garden or a roomy container, and its low profile suits a small planting space. [SANBI PlantZAfrica](https://pza.sanbi.org/encephalartos-ngoyanus) describes its natural range in KwaZulu-Natal and Eswatini; Kew records the same accepted taxon and distribution ([Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:297121-1)). ## Form and placement The underground stem is usually solitary and may reach about 30 cm long. Its pinnate leaves are roughly 60–125 cm long, dark green above and paler below. In habitat it grows on rocky slopes, in open grassland and along forest margins, so a free-draining position with dappled light reflects the conditions SANBI recommends for cultivation. ## Siting and growth This is a slow-growing cycad. It is sensitive to overwatering; allow the root zone to drain freely and avoid keeping it wet in cool weather. SANBI reports tolerance of light frost, while plants in colder areas may shed leaves in autumn and should then be kept drier. Buy nursery-propagated stock from a legal supplier because wild cycads are protected and collection can harm natural populations. ## Maintenance Keep the crown clear of debris and remove damaged or fully spent leaves carefully. Check drainage before increasing irrigation, especially during cool or dormant periods.
