About Encephalartos nubimontanus

Encephalartos nubimontanus is a striking cycad with a rounded crown of arching, gray-blue leaves. It can form a strong focal point in a warm garden or a large container, while its substantial mature stem makes space planning important. [SANBI PlantZAfrica](https://pza.sanbi.org/encephalartos-nubimontanus) gives the species’ leaf and stem dimensions and cultivation guidance; Kew records its accepted name, Wolkberg Mountains range, and current extinct-in-the-wild status ([Plants of the World Online](https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:986593-1/general-information)). ## Form and seasonal character This single-stemmed cycad may reach about 2.5 m tall and sometimes develops basal offsets. Its pinnate leaves are about 1.2 m long; the blue-gray rachis and slightly twisted leaves create a distinctive crown. Separate male and female plants bear cones, with female cones developing in early summer and ripening later. ## Siting and water Plant in full sun or semi-shade in well-drained soil, in a frost-free, sheltered position. SANBI describes the species as drought resistant but advises sufficient moisture during growth and letting the soil dry between waterings; persistent wetness can lead to rot. Frost may burn foliage even where an established plant survives. Use a container with ample drainage if growing it under cover. ## Maintenance Remove only fully dead leaves and keep the crown and planting surface clear. Check for scale insects or woolly aphids during routine inspection, and protect the plant from strong wind that can damage the leaves.
