About Encephalartos princeps x horridus

Encephalartos princeps × horridus is a cultivated cross between two South African cycads. The exact cross is listed by [Fairview Nursery](https://fairviewnursery.com/plants/cycads/); one parent, E. princeps, is known for blue-green foliage and the other, E. horridus, for stiff, armed leaflets ([SANBI: E. princeps](https://pza.sanbi.org/encephalartos-princeps), [SANBI: E. horridus](https://pza.sanbi.org/encephalartos-horridus)). Hybrid plants can vary, so assess the individual plant’s crown and mature scale rather than assuming a fixed color or size from its parents. ## Form and use This evergreen cycad offers a bold, architectural accent for a sunny courtyard, rock garden or spacious container. Its mature form and leaf character depend on the individual hybrid; the name identifies the parent cross, not a uniform cultivar with guaranteed dimensions. As with other cycads, it produces cones rather than flowers. ## Siting and water The E. princeps parent is grown in full sun and well-drained, aerated soil, with moderate watering. Those are reasonable starting conditions for this cross, but observe how the plant responds and avoid leaving its root zone saturated. Protect the crown from damage and leave room for the leaves to extend. ## Maintenance Use a free-draining growing medium and remove only dead or damaged leaves. Keep the crown unobstructed and inspect new growth regularly. Nursery-grown material is preferable for cycads; confirm lawful, propagated origin when acquiring a specimen.
