About Encephalartos umbeluziensis

Encephalartos umbeluziensis is a small to medium cycad with a usually solitary subterranean stem and a crown of glossy green fronds. Its natural range follows the Umbeluzi River valley in Mozambique and Eswatini, where it grows in low scrub woodland, dry savanna, bushveld and river floodplains. [Africa Cycads](https://www.africacycads.com/species.php?id=102) ## Form and setting Mature fronds are about 1–2 m long, making the plant a strong architectural accent while the stem remains mostly below ground. It suits subtropical gardens and can be grown in a container while young. The species tolerates open sun, though it grows best in partial shade; a sheltered position helps protect the long leaves from wind. ## Soil and water Use well-drained, gritty soil and water regularly through dry periods while avoiding persistently wet conditions. Established plants become drought resistant, but frost can damage them, so choose a frost-free site or protect container plants in cold weather. ## Maintenance Keep the crown clear of forceful irrigation and avoid overwatering. Allow room for the mature fronds and handle the plant carefully if transplanting.
