About Encephalartos whitelockii

Encephalartos whitelockii is a large evergreen cycad native to Uganda. It forms substantial clumps, with leaves that can reach 4 m long and upright stems reported to about 3.5 m; its scale makes it a focal specimen for spacious subtropical landscapes. [NParks Flora & Fauna Web](https://www.nparks.gov.sg/florafaunaweb/flora/5/1/5111) ## Form and setting In the wild it grows around the Mpanga River on rocky cliffs and steep slopes, as well as in dense evergreen montane forest. Garden placement can range from an open sunny position to a sheltered setting that reflects its forest habitat. Allow generous space for the mature clump and its long, stiff foliage. ## Soil and water NParks recommends full sun and moderate watering, and describes roots associated with moist, well-drained conditions. Provide drainage while watering consistently during active growth; avoid leaving the root zone waterlogged. ## Maintenance Use this species as a long-term architectural specimen rather than a small border plant. Give it room to develop, keep access clear around the clump, and protect the foliage from avoidable mechanical damage.
