About Red Abyssinian Banana Tree

Red Abyssinian banana is the ornamental selection Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii', grown for its huge paddle-shaped leaves with red or maroon coloring. The foliage gives a bold tropical look in a warm garden or a large container; the plant is tender and needs frost protection. [NC State Extension](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/ensete-ventricosum-maurelii/) · [Royal Horticultural Society](https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/188021/ensete-maurelii/details) ## Form and placement The RHS gives a broad mature height and spread of 2.5–4 m, while NC State describes 8–10 ft height and 6–8 ft width in temperate growing conditions. Use a sheltered focal position with room for very large leaves, or grow it in a container that can be moved under cover. Full sun to partial shade is suitable. ## Soil and water Plant in moisture-retentive but well-drained soil and water during active growth without keeping the roots saturated. Strong winds can shred the broad leaves, so a sheltered site helps retain their display. ## Maintenance Remove dead leaves by cutting at the base of each blade. In climates with freezing temperatures, protect the plant under glass or move its container indoors; it is suited outdoors year-round only where frost does not occur.
