Create design onlineAbout Bluestem Joint Fir
Bluestem joint fir is an upright shrub with blue-green, jointed stems that remain ornamental through winter. Its tiny brown scale leaves are inconspicuous, while female plants may produce fleshy red fruits; it is native from Central Asia to northwestern China. ## Form and placement
Plants are listed at about 3–6 ft tall with a similar spread. The open, upright habit works in a dry border, gravel garden or sunny shrub planting, where the distinctive stems can be seen against darker foliage. Full sun is preferred, though part shade is tolerated.
## Soil and water
This species tolerates heat and drought once established. Use a freely draining site and avoid routine overwatering, especially in cool weather. Oregon State lists it for USDA hardiness zone 4.
## Maintenance
Allow the shrub to keep its natural branching form and prune only to remove damaged or unwanted stems. Keep enough space for a broad outline and avoid placing it where frequent shaping would be needed.
