About Dwarf Joint Fir (Dwarf Mormon Tea)

Dwarf joint fir is a very low-growing evergreen shrub with fine green stems and foliage. Fort Collins lists it under Ephedra monosperma and gives Ephedra minima as a synonym; the same record describes a mature plant up to about 4 inches tall and 6 inches to 1 foot wide. [City of Fort Collins Plant List](https://apps.fcgov.com/plant-list/?view=443-dwarf-joint-fir) ## Form and placement Its compact scale suits rock gardens, the front of a dry border or small spaces where a low evergreen ground layer is useful. The plant is listed for full sun to part sun and can produce yellow flowers in June. It readily suckers, so allow room for gradual spread. ## Soil and water Provide well-drained soil and use a low-water schedule after establishment. Avoid sites that remain wet, particularly during cool conditions. ## Maintenance Check the edge of the planting periodically and remove suckers only when they extend beyond the intended space. Leave the central growth undisturbed so the plant can maintain its low, compact form.
