About Epilobium angustifolium

Fireweed is a tall perennial with narrow leaves, upright stems, and pink to magenta flowers held in long racemes. It is a vigorous colonizer that spreads by rhizomes and wind-carried seed, so it suits naturalistic spaces where a large patch can be managed. ## Growth and Siting Allow 2–5 ft for flowering stems and expect rhizomes to expand beyond the original clump. Full sun to part shade works; in hot climates, afternoon shade and moist soil help it through summer. It tolerates disturbance and often establishes quickly in open ground. The [North Carolina Extension Plant Toolbox](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/epilobium-angustifolium/common-name/fire-weed/) describes its garden conditions and dimensions; the [U.S. Forest Service review](https://research.fs.usda.gov/feis/species-reviews/chaang) documents its synonymy, flowering period, and wildlife value. ## Bloom and Wildlife Flowering runs from summer into fall, with pink-purple blooms attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its capsules release silky, wind-dispersed seed after flowering. ## Maintenance Use it in a meadow or informal border rather than a tightly controlled bed. Remove spent flowers before seed dispersal if you want fewer seedlings, and divide or cut back rhizomes to contain a colony.
