About Bi-Color Barrenwort Fairywings

'Sulphureum' is a spreading barrenwort selected for lemon-yellow spring flowers and rounded, heart-shaped leaflets. Its low evergreen-to-semi-evergreen foliage makes it useful as a quiet groundcover in shaded areas. ## Garden Use Use this selection beneath trees, along a shaded border, or in a large container where its slow spread can be accommodated. The Royal Horticultural Society lists the selection at about 35 cm tall and wide and describes a dense carpet of mid-green leaves, with brownish-red coloring on young growth. It is particularly useful in dry shade once established. [RHS plant profile](https://rhs.crocdn.co.uk/plants/_/epimedium--versicolor-sulphureum/classid.2000045700/) ## Siting Choose partial to full shade and humus-rich, well-drained soil. Water well after planting and keep the soil moist through dry spells while the roots establish. A spring mulch of leaf mold or compost helps conserve moisture and limit weeds. The RHS names this selection *Epimedium × versicolor* 'Sulphureum'; this catalog record keeps that exact cultivar identity. Established plants need little routine pruning.
