Horsetail

Horsetail, or scouring rush, is an evergreen, non-flowering plant whose dark green, jointed stems make a strong vertical accent. The stems remain noticeable through winter, while creeping rhizomes can spread beyond the original planting. ## Growing Conditions Grow in reliably moist soil or at the edge of shallow water, in sun or partial shade. The stiff, hollow stems resemble bamboo and have dark bands at their joints. Missouri Botanical Garden references report about 2–4 feet tall and 1–6 feet wide, though a contained planting is easier to manage. ## Landscape Use Use it beside ponds, in bog or rain gardens, or in a large patio container for year-round structure. Rhizomes spread aggressively and small pieces can regenerate. Sink a sturdy pot or install a root barrier before planting where spread needs to be limited. ## Maintenance Keep the root zone moist and remove damaged stems. Check planting edges regularly and restrain rhizomes before they move into neighboring beds.
