Foxtail

Foxtail lilies, also called desert candles, are clump-forming perennials grown for tall, dense spikes of star-shaped flowers above strap-like leaves. The genus varies widely in stature, so allow room for the selected species or cultivar and avoid assigning one mature size to every Eremurus. ## Form and season Plants produce basal leaf rosettes followed by erect, leafless flower stems in early to midsummer. The Royal Horticultural Society gives a broad genus range of about 3–9 feet tall and 1.3–4.9 feet wide; individual species and hybrids fall at different points within it. Flowers may be white, yellow, pink, or orange depending on the selection. ## Siting and care Choose the sunniest position available in free-draining soil. The fleshy roots are shallow and easily damaged, so keep digging and close competition to a minimum. Keep plants from drying while leaves are active, then allow the soil to become drier during summer dormancy. Shelter taller forms from strong wind. ## Maintenance Stake tall flower stems if needed and protect emerging spring growth when a hard frost is forecast. After flowering, let the foliage die back naturally; divide mature clumps only when necessary because the roots are brittle.
