## Landscape value
Loquat is a broadleaf evergreen fruit tree with large, textured leaves, fragrant creamy-white flowers and yellow to orange edible fruit. [University of Florida IFAS](https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/ST235/pdf) describes a rounded tree commonly 15 feet tall in sun, potentially 20–30 feet tall, with a broad canopy. It is distinct from bronze loquat (*Eriobotrya deflexa*).
## Growing conditions and fruit
Plant in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil with sufficient room for the mature canopy. Water while establishing and during extended drought as needed. Trees can survive more cold than their flowers or developing fruit: [UF IFAS](https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/MG050/pdf) notes that temperatures below 27°F can kill flowers and fruit. Cultivars vary in fruit and pollination needs. Eat only the ripe flesh; discard seeds.
## Maintenance and firewise guidance
Remove fallen fruit and dead foliage, prune for access and structure, and monitor for fire blight and other local diseases. The [Tasmania Fire Service 2014–15 guide](https://d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net/landcaretas/pages/101/attachments/original/1466562095/140835_TFSFireResistingPlants_2014_15.pdf?1466562095=) rates this species moderate flammability. It advises against moderate-flammability plants in the building protection zone, recommends they do not dominate the garden, and calls for ongoing removal of dead material. Follow local fire-authority guidance.
## Queensland bushfire guidance
