About James' Buckwheat Antelope Sage

James’ buckwheat or antelope sage (*Eriogonum jamesii*) is a low, mounded perennial subshrub with a woody crown and fuzzy basal leaves. Flower color varies by botanical variety, from cream to buff or yellow, and umbels appear from early summer into fall. ## Landscape Use Plant it in a sunny dry border, rock garden, or xeric bed. The [University of Wyoming Western Native Plants guide](https://cwelwnp.usu.edu/westernnativeplants/plantlist_view.php?id=26&name=eriogonumjamesii) describes this species as a low-water perennial for borders and dry gardens. Foliage may turn reddish or burgundy in fall, and the flower display attracts pollinators. ## Growing Conditions Full sun and well-drained, nutrient-poor soil suit this species. It prefers neutral to alkaline conditions; clay is possible when the site does not stay wet. Established plants need little supplemental water, especially in dry years. ## Maintenance Deadhead after flowering to remove spent heads and keep the mound neat, or leave them in place for a natural dry display. Avoid overwatering, particularly in clay soil.
